We are in deep trouble. Of course, theologically, it is a just punishment for the sins of our nation. We put out our own eyes when we decide to sin and tolerate sin as national policy (abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, etc.). The Enlightenment has turned into a new Dark Age: "You say you see, and yet you are blind."

John 9:39-41

39 Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.”

40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?”

41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.

The barbarians threatening civilization are coming from within. They are spiritual forces rather than invading hordes from the north: relativism, materialism, gnosticism, atheism, pragmatism, narcissism. The new barbarians cannot be defeated by force of arms. They can only be converted and healed by the sovereign grace of God.
