Google Chrome Review

Highlights

Features advertised in the comic book:

  • Stable, quick, efficient.
  • Clean interface.
  • Open source (!).
  • Independent threads for each tab.
    • More stable.
    • Pop-ups contained in tab.
  • Better memory management.
  • Better debugging of plug-ins.
  • Huge test bed (automated testing against billions and billions of sample pages).
  • Independent rendering engine (Webkit).
  • Stratified security (user .. application elements).
  • Gears: extensible API.

Things I like

  • Speed.
  • Looks:
    • No title bar.
    • Maximum user space.
    • Default page rendering.
  • Access to history: start page, back button.
  • Omnibox (Omnibar?).
  • Default font size.
  • Great mouse feel:
    • + to open new tab.
    • Access to history.
  • Application shortcuts (security).
  • Keyboard shortcuts. Had to guess that there would be shortcuts.
  • Shift-ESC: Task Manager.

Things I don't like

  • Edit problems (wiki, Angel)
  • Few plugins or add-ons as yet. None of my Firefox favorites:
    • No-Script
    • Firebug
    • Weather
    • Foxmarks
    • Zotero
  • No linux edition now (maybe never?)

The Competition

  • IE
  • Firefox
    • Minefield (x64 version)
    • Prism (was Webrunner)
  • Opera
  • Safari (kissing cousins–they share Webkit)
  • sundry linux browsers

Some internals
