Eat, drink, and be merry

"Eat, drink, and be merry" is in the Scriptures. It is the solution to the problem of depression and death in Ecclesiastes (2:24, 3:12-13, 3:22, 5:17, 8:15, 9:7-10, 11:9-10). This is not "the full gospel," but, in many ways, it is the summit of Jewish spirituality. In the old Church, priests were supposed to say something funny on the Sunday after Easter (Quasimodo Sunday), for which the entrance antiphon is "Like [Quasimodo] newborn infants, you must long for the pure, spiritual milk, that in him you may grow to salvation, alleluia." "God is love" (1 Jn 4:16). He is also joy, pure and perfect. The Good News is that our story has a happy ending. That's the plan God has in mind for all of us. Yes, there are sorrows. Yes, the Cross comes to all of us. We remember Jesus' "sorrowful passion" every Friday. But every Sunday, we renew our faith in Jesus' Resurrection — and our own.
