The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Pleroma: The fullness of Time, the fullness of Eternity, the fullness of love, the fullness of joy, anticipation of the Beatific Vision, which satisfies all of our heart's desires forever and ever. Amen.

Preface for the feast of Christ the King
You anointed Jesus Christ, Your only Son,
with the oil of gladness,
as the eternal priest and universal king.
As priest He offered His life on the altar of the cross
and redeemed the human race by this one perfect sacrifice of peace.
As king He claims dominion over all creation,
that He may present to You, His almighty Father,
an eternal and universal kingdom:
a kingdom of truth and life,
a kingdom of holiness and grace,
a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.

This is the time of fulfillment [Πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρὸς].
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel. (Mk 1:15)

Heaven and earth are full [πλήρης] of your glory.
πλήρης πᾶσα ἡ γῆ τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ
John 15:11
“I have told you [these things]
so that my joy may be in you
and your joy may be complete [πληρωθῇ]."

Six Sundays

Six days of Creation.

Forty-two days.

All Saints, All Souls, and the feast of St. Martin of Tours are always in Pleroma. "A San Martino, castagne e vino, e ogni mosto diventa vino!"

Christmas can fall on any day of the week. The other feasts are all Sundays.

Pleroma begins between October 9 and 15.

Christ the King falls between November 20 to 26. Never in December.

Advent begins between November 28 and December 3.

There are 42 days in Pleroma. Six weeks with seven days per week. The season is always 42 days long because it begins on a Sunday and ends the day before Christ the King, which is always on a Sunday.

There are Seven Days of Christ the King between Pleroma and Advent. Hmm. The Last Days of Ordinary Time.

In the spirit of Septuagesima, Sexagesima, Quinquagesima, and Quadragesima Sundays.

Not-so-ordinary time.

November 23: feast of Blessed Miguel Pro, SJ. Viva Cristo Re! Because the feast of Christ the King always falls between November 20 and 26, Pro's feast is always nearby: 20 21 22 23 24 25 26. Three times it comes a little after Christ the King, three times a little bit before, and once in a while the two feasts coincide on the 23rd.

Year A

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Matt 22:1-14 or 22:1-10

"Then the king said to his attendants,
‘Bind his hands and feet,
and cast him into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’
Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Lectionary
Isa 45:1, 4-6

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus,
[...]
It is I who arm you, though you know me not,
so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun
people may know that there is none besides me.
I am the LORD, there is no other.

Ps 96:1+3, 4-5, 7-8, 9+10ac

Say among the nations: The LORD is king,
he governs the peoples with equity.

1 Thess 1:1-5b

Grace to you and peace.

Matt 22:15-21

Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Lectionary
Exod 22:21-27

If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate.

Ps 18:1-2, 3+6b, 46+50ab

R. I love you, Lord, my strength.

Praised be the LORD, I exclaim,
and I am safe from my enemies.

1 Thess 1:5c-10

[You] await his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from the dead,
Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath.

Matt 22:34-40

You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
[...]
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

St. John of the Cross
"In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone."

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Lectionary
Mal 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10

A great King am I, says the LORD of hosts,
and my name will be feared among the nations.
And now, O priests, this commandment is for you: [...]
You have turned aside from the way,
and have caused many to falter by your instruction; [...]
I, therefore, have made you contemptible
and base before all the people.

Ps 131:1, 2, 3

R. In you, Lord, I have found my peace.

Nay rather, I have stilled and quieted
my soul like a weaned child.
Like a weaned child on its mother's lap,
so is my soul within me.

1 Thess 2:7b-9, 13

We were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children. [...]

The word of God [...] is now at work in you who believe.

Matt 23:1-12

You have but one teacher, and you are all [brothers and sisters to each other].
[...]
you have but one Father in heaven.
[...]
you have but one master, the Christ.

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Lectionary
Wis 6:12-16

For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence,
and whoever for her sake keeps vigil
shall quickly be free from care;
because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her,
and graciously appears to them in the ways,
and meets them with all solicitude.

Ps 63:1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7

R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

I will remember you upon my couch,
and through the night-watches I will meditate on you:
You are my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.

1 Thess 4:13-18 or 4:13-14

Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive,
who are left until the coming of the Lord,
will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself, with a word of command,
with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God,
will come down from heaven,
and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive, who are left,
will be caught up together with them in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
Thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words.

Matt 25:1-13

Therefore, stay awake,
for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Lectionary
Prov 31:10-13, 16-18, 20, 26, 28-31 ++

Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5

R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

The LORD bless you from Zion:
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.

1 Thess 5:1-6

Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters,
you have no need for anything to be written to you.
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come
like a thief at night.
[...]
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do,
but let us stay alert and sober.

Jn 15:4a, 5b

Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord.
Whoever remains in me bears much fruit.

Matt 24:36; 25:14-30 ++

Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
[...]
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

Solemnity of Christ, the King -- A

Solemnity of Christ, the King -- A

Lectionary
Ezek 34:11-12, 15-17

I myself will look after and tend my sheep.
As a shepherd tends his flock
[...]
so will I tend my sheep.
I will rescue them [...]
I myself will pasture my sheep;
I myself will give them rest, [...]
The lost I will seek out,
the strayed I will bring back,
the injured I will bind up,
the sick I will heal,

Ps 23: 1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6

R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.

1 Cor 15:20-26, 28

For just as in Adam all die,
so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
[...]
Then comes the end,
when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father,
when he has destroyed every sovereignty
and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
When everything is subjected to him,
then the Son himself will also be subjected
to the one who subjected everything to him,
so that God may be all in all.

Mark 11:9-10

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!

Matt 25:31-46

'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.'

A secret season

A celebration of love, justice, and joy.

"Peace, love, and joy!"

Celebrating the Pleroma:

- Has no rules or regulations, except for the rule that there are no rules or regulations.
- Is not mandated by the Church.
- Is not forbidden by the Church.
- Has no special decorations.
- Does not use any special vestments.
- Imposes no fasts or feasts on the community.
- Is entirely inward.
- Is a focus of meditation and prayer.
- Does have mantras:
"Come, Lord Jesus, come!"
"Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done."

Pleroma is the completion of ordinary time, which directs our attention to the completion of time and the new creation in eternity.

It is a time to seek the grace of the contemplatio ad amorem.

The coming of the King and the Kingdom is the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation.

The culmination of all of our deepest desires.
The culmination of creation.
The culmination of the liturgical year.
- The Return of the King in glory.

It is a joyful season.

"The last word is joy!"

"Already but not yet."

- The Kingdom has come.
- The Kingdom is within us.
- The Kingdom is not yet fully realized.

"The End is near!"

Mark 1:15

Luke 10:9.11, 21:31

Passage from preface about what today's feast means: joyful fulfillment

I pray for the joyful fulfillment of your vocation.

I pray for the fullness of God's love for you.

"Joyful fulfillment!"

A greeting for the season.

Beatifying vision.

Anticipating the beatific vision.

Helps to make us happy in this life.

What is easy to see is suffering, death, misery, poverty, natural catastrophes, sin, stupidity, loss, grief, innocent suffering, crimes, wrongdoing.

The reality of God's glory is hidden at the moment behind the veil of creation, but what we see now will not be so forever.

Things are gonna change, and the whole story of the universe will have a happy ending.

Forward-looking

The only season that is primarily future-oriented.

Advent looks forwards and backwards.
Christmas looks back to the birth of Jesus.
Lent considers the history of sin and salvation through the Paschal mysteries.
The Easter season is bi-focal, rooted in the Resurrection of Jesus and the joy of the apostles.
Ordinary time contemplates the difficulties of the disciples in ordinary circumstances.

The second Advent fulfills the first.

The Creed is prophetic:

He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end. [...]
I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

In Pleroma, we look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen!

"The one who sat on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new'" (Rev. 21:5).

His wrath is momentary

Psalm 30:6
For his anger lasts but a moment:
his favor a lifetime.
At dusk weeping comes for the night,
but at dawn there is rejoicing.

His love is everlasting.

"All'alba vincerò."

Greetings

The joy of Christ the King be with you!

The joy of Jesus be with you!

The joy of Judgment Day be with you!

The joy of Jesus, your spouse, be with you!

The peace, love and joy of Christ the King be with you always!

¡Viva Cristo Rey! (Bl. Miguel Pro)

St. Mother Teresa
"May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. It is this union with your Divine bridegroom that is the cause of your joy."

"The grace and peace of Christ the King be with you always!"

The grace and peace of Pleroma be with you!

Peace be with you!

Peace, love, and joy!

Hail the new creation!

The End is near!

Happy Harvest!

It's harvest time!

Jesus is LORD.

"The kingdom of God is within you" (Lk 17:21).

"The kingdom of God is in your midst"
γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντὸς ὑμῶν ἐστιν

"The Kingdom of God is at hand!" (Mark 1:15).

"The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News."
Πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρὸς καὶ ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ μετανοεῖτε καὶ πιστεύετε ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ

Caution

The devil can quote Scripture for his purpose; and the text of Scripture which he now most commonly quotes is, “The Kingdom of heaven is within you.” That text has been the stay and support of more Pharisees and prigs and self-righteous spiritual bullies than all the dogmas in creation; it has served to identify self-satisfaction with the peace that passes all understanding. And the text to be quoted in answer to it is that which declares that no man can receive the kingdom except as a little child. What we are to have inside is a childlike spirit; but the childlike spirit is not entirely concerned about what is inside. It is the first mark of possessing it that one is interested in what is outside. The most childlike thing about a child is his curiosity and his appetite and his power of wonder at the world. We might almost say that the whole advantage of having the kingdom within is that we look for it somewhere else.”
― G.K. Chesterton, What I Saw in America

Prayers

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom,
the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Hymns

Joy to the world

Joy to the world, the Lord [will] come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n, and heav’n, and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

The King of Glory Comes, the Nation Rejoices

Based on Ps 24.

The king of glory comes,
The nation rejoices
Open the gates before him,
Lift up your voices.

Who is the king of glory, How shall we call him?
He is Emmanuel, the promise of ages.

In all of Galilee, in city or village
He goes among his people, curing their illness

He gave his life for us, the pledge of salvation;
He took up on himself the sins of the nation.

He conquered sin and death, he truly has risen.
And he will share with us his heavenly vision.
