The sin of the world

ἁμαρτίαν means "missed the target."

Why did the 1973 translation have "sin of the world" in the Gloria rather than "sins of the world," as in the "Lamb of God" and the "Behold the Lamb of God" proclamation just before Communion?

Gospel of John

John is the only gospel that calls Jesus "the Lamb of God" (1:29, 1:36):

"The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world'" (Jn 1:29).

The book of Revelation is the only other scripture that uses "the Lamb" as a title for Jesus (Rev 5:6, 7:17, 14:10, 15:3, 19:9, 21:23, 22:1, 22:3). It does not use the full expression, "Lamb of God," that is found in the the two gospel verses.

The phrase "the sin of the world" is unique to John's gospel. It is the sole source for this expression. It appears only in John 1:29 and nowhere else. There is a close association between 1:29 and 16:8:

"And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation."

In all of the appearances of "Lamb of God" in the Mass--Gloria, Agnus Dei, Ecce Agnus Dei--the Latin uses the plural. The use of the plural in the Latin Mass is not a correct translation of the original verse in John 1:29.

Textual variants

"New Translation: What's Changed and Why."
It also now reads the “sins” of the world, rather than the “sin”: both versions find textual support in John 1:29, since there are differences between manuscripts.

New Translation of the Liturgy

Gloria

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;

Offertory Rite

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

This prayer derives from from Psalm 51, the Miserere, David's great psalm of repentance after committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging for her husband to die in battle--along with many other innocent soldiers! Both the psalm and the prayer speak of iniquity and sin in the singular.

Lamb of God

Latin

The Latin texts for the Mass use the plural of "peccatum":

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

English

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Ecce Agnus Dei

Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

009s John 16:08 John 16:8-9

8 And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:

9 sin, because they do not believe in me;

010s John 19:11 John 19:11 Jesus answered [him], “You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
011s Acts 07:60 Acts 7:60 Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them”; and when he said this, he fell asleep.
012s Rom 03:09 Rom 3:9 Well, then, are we better off? Not entirely, for we have already brought the charge against Jews and Greeks alike that they are all under the domination of sin.
013s Rom 03:20 Rom 3:20 since no human being will be justified in his sight by observing the law; for through the law comes consciousness of sin.
014s Rom 04:08 Rom 4:8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.
015s Rom 05:12 Rom 5:12-13

12 Therefore, just as through one person sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned —

13 for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law.

016s Rom 05:20 Rom 5:20-21

20The law entered in so that transgression might increase but, where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more,

21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

017s Rom 06:01 Rom 6:1-23

1 What then shall we say? Shall we persist in sin that grace may abound? Of course not!

2 How can we who died to sin yet live in it?

3 Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4 We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.

5 For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.

6 We know that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin.f

7 For a dead person has been absolved from sin.

8 If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.

9 We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.

10 As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God.

11 Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as [being] dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore, sin must not reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires.

13 And do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for righteousness.

14 For sin is not to have any power over you, since you are not under the law but under grace.

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!

16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

17 But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted.

18 Freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness.

19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.

21 But what profit did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

22 But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

018s Rom 07:07 Rom 7:7-25

7 What then can we say? That the law is sin? Of course not! Yet I did not know sin except through the law, and I did not know what it is to covet except that the law said, “You shall not covet.”

8 But sin, finding an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetousness. Apart from the law sin is dead.

9 I once lived outside the law, but when the commandment came, sin became alive;

10 then I died, and the commandment that was for life turned out to be death for me.

11 For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it put me to death.

12 So then the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did the good, then, become death for me? Of course not! sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin, worked death in me through the good, so that sin might become sinful beyond measure through the commandment.

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold into slavery to sin.

15 What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.

16 Now if I do what I do not want, I concur that the law is good.

17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not.

19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want.

20 Now if [I] do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand.

22 For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self,

23 but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

24 Miserable one that I am! Who will deliver me from this mortal body?

25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with my mind, serve the law of God but, with my flesh, the law of sin.

019s Rom 08:02 Rom 8:2-3

2 For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death.

3 For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.

020s Rom 08:10 Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
021s Rom 14:23 Rom 14:23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because this is not from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

025s Gal 02:17 Gal 2:17 But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? Of course not!
026s Gal 03:22 Gal 3:22 But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
027s 2 Thess 02:03 2 Thess 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one [Greek: "the man of sin"] is revealed, the one doomed to perdition,
028s Heb 03:13 Heb 3:13 Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin.
029s Heb 04:15 Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
030b Heb 09:26 Heb 9:26-28

26 if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice.

27 Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,

28 so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

031s Heb 10:06 Heb 10:6-8

6 holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in.

7 Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.'”

8 First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in.” These are offered according to the law.

032s Heb 10:18 Heb 10:18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer offering for sin.
033s Heb 11:25 Heb 11:25 [Moses] chose to be ill-treated along with the people of God rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin.
034s Heb 12:01 Heb 12:1-4

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us

2 while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.

3 Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

035s Heb 13:11 Heb 13:11 The bodies of the animals whose blood the high priest brings into the sanctuary as a sin offering are burned outside the camp.

039s 1 Peter 02:22 1 Peter 2:22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."
040s 1 Peter 04:01 1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same attitude (for whoever suffers in the flesh has broken with sin).
041s 2 Peter 02:14 2 Peter 2:14 Their eyes are full of adultery and insatiable for sin. They seduce unstable people, and their hearts are trained in greed. Accursed children!
042s 1 John 01:07 1 John 1:7-8

7 But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

8 If we say, “We are without sin,” we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

043b 1 John 03:04 1 John 3:4-5

4 Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.

5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

044s 1 John 03:08 1 John 3:8-9

8 Whoever sins [this is a verb form, so it is not a plural noun] belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.

9 No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin [another verb form, not a singular noun] because he is begotten by God.

045s 1 John 05:16 1 John 5:16-17

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray.l

17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.

Limitations

This scripture study is concerned with the singular and plural forms of "sin." It does not count:

synonyms for sin: evil, wrongdoing;
particular forms of sin: pride, greed, lust, anger, etc.;
circumlocutions;
other ways of talking about God's saving action through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Interpretations

Edward Pothier.
"Sin (in the singular) would be the state of rebellion against and separation from God while sins (in the plural) would be thoughts, words, or actions resulting from that rebellion and separation. Thankfully, it can be said that the Lamb of God takes away both, but the origin of the plural is curious."
Guesses:
  • Sin = "The totality of all sins." A collective reality with many members, like "team" or "nation."
  • Sin = The disposition to sin--the root of all sins.
  • The plural in Latin has a better sound to it than the singular: "peccata mundi" vs. "peccatum mundi."

The singularity of sin

Gal 3:22 But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.

The singular and plural are interchangeable

Gospel of John

John 8:21-24
John 8:21 says, "I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin" (ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ὑμῶν). But just three verses later, John 8:24 uses the plural twice to make the same point: "That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins" (ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν).
This passage shows that John did not have a solemn commitment to speak about sin in the singular. He uses the singular and plural as absolutely synonymous in these two verses. Translators usually interpret the singular in 8:21 as a plural, changing the literal word "sin" to the synonym "sins" in order to match the plural form in 8:24.
John 20:23
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.

Letter to the Hebrews

Heb 9:26-28

26 if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice.

27 Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,

28 so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

Heb 10:17-18

17 he also says: “Their sins and their evildoing I will remember no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer offering for sin.

1 Peter

1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

1 John

1 John 3:4-5

4 Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.

5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

Lavabo

Although "sins" is now used in all of the rest of the Mass, the prayer for the washing of hands refers to the "sin" of the priest:

Lava me, Dómine, ab iniquitáte mea, et a peccáto meo munda me.
Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

I suppose there may be an echo of Psalm 51 in here somewhere.
