Converted on 20 January 1842 by an apparition of Mary in Sant'Andrea delle Fratte ("St. Andrew in the Thickets") in Rome.

Entered the Jesuits in 1842, ordained in 1848. Left the Society, with permission, to live in the Holy Land and evangelize Jews with his brother and the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion.

This was Alphonse's response when he was challenged to wear the Miraculous Medal and pray the Memorare every day: "If it does me no good, at least it will do me no harm."

A painting of the apparation is known as Our Lady of the Miracle and is hung in the chapel of St. Michael the Archangel, where she appeared to Ratisbonne.
