Novena to St. Lucy

Opening Prayer

Dearest Saint Lucy,
your name means light;
by the light of faith
which God bestowed upon you,
increase and preserve his light in my soul,
so that I may avoid evil,
be zealous in the performance of good works,
and abhor nothing so much as the blindness
and the darkness of evil and sin.

Please obtain for me from God
perfect vision for my bodily eyes
and the grace to use them
for God’s greater honor and glory
and for the salvation of souls.

St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr,
hear my prayers
and obtain what I ask
through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

First Day

John 9:1-7

¹ As he passed by he saw a man blind from birth.

² His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

³ Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.

⁴ We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.

⁵ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

⁶ When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes,

⁷ and said to him, “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed, and came back able to see.

Second Day

John 9:35-39

³⁵ When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

³⁶ He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?”

³⁷ Jesus said to him, “You have seen him and the one speaking with you is he.”

³⁸ He said, “I do believe, Lord,” and he worshiped him.

³⁹ Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.”

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 1:1-5

and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.

² He was in the beginning with God.

³ All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.

⁴ What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;

⁵ the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.

Fifth Day

Mark 8:22

²² When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.

²³ He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, “Do you see anything?”

²⁴ Looking up he replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.”

²⁵ Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.

Sixth Day

Luke 18:35

³⁵ Now as he approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging,

³⁶ and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening.

³⁷ They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

³⁸ He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!”

³⁹ The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!”

⁴⁰ Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him,

⁴¹ “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.”

⁴² Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.”

⁴³ He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.

Seventh Day

Matthew 9:21

²⁷ And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed [him], crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!”

²⁸ When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him.

²⁹ Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”

³⁰ And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”

³¹ But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.

Eighth Day

Luke 4:16-20

¹⁶ He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day.

¹⁷ He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

¹⁸ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
¹⁹ and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

²⁰ Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.

²¹ He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Ninth Day

Matthew 20:29

²⁹ As they left Jericho, a great crowd followed him.

³⁰ Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “[Lord,] Son of David, have pity on us!”

³¹ The crowd warned them to be silent, but they called out all the more, “Lord, Son of David, have pity on us!”

³² Jesus stopped and called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?”

³³ They answered him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.”

³⁴ Moved with pity, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight, and followed him.

Concluding Prayer

Relying on Your goodness, O God,
we humbly ask You,
through the intercession of Saint Lucy,
Virgin and Martyr,
to give perfect vision to our eyes,
to our minds,
and to our hearts
that our eyesight and insight may serve Your greater honor and glory.

Saint Lucy,
hear our prayers
and obtain for us from God all that we need and desire.
