Although this prayer was written for the priest to pray at Mass, there is no law against the laity using it in their own private prayer. Lex orandi, lex credendi: The way in which the Church prays reveals what the Church believes. This prayer teaches us that God, not evil, has the final say. God is greater than any evil we can experience in life.

This prayer is called the Embolism (from the Greek word ἐμβολισμός, an interpolation).

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
