The shorter ending of Mark

The shorter ending of Mark: Several witnesses, including four uncial Greek manuscripts of the seventh, eighth, and ninth centuries (L Ψ 099 0112), as well as Old Latin k, the margin of the Harclean Syriac, several Sahidic and Bohairic manuscripts, and not a few Ethiopic manuscripts, continue after verse 8 as follows (with trifling variations):

But they reported briefly to Peter and those with him all that they had been told. And after this Jesus himself sent out by means of them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.

All of these witnesses except itk also continue with verses 9-20.

Introduction from the original HTML version

Introduction from the original page at Bible Researcher:
The tables of parallels here are based upon the Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum of Kurt Aland, 13th edition (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1985). In the arrangement of Aland's Synopsis the numbered pericopes are often repeated so as to give a continuous series of references in canonical order for each of the four gospels. The bold type in the tables below indicates the verses in order for each gospel. Thus for example, pericopes no. 121 and 135 are identical except for the difference in bold type. In 121 the bold type for Matthew and Mark shows that the pericope "Jesus' True Kindred" precedes the parable of the sower. The pericope is then repeated as 135 with bold type for Luke, because Luke has the pericope after the parable of the sower. The student who is using these tables can thus run his eye down each Gospel's column, stopping only at the bold references, to get all the references and parallels in order for each Gospel.
Note to online users: The tables are supplied with hypertext links in the first column. Click on the links to view the parallel passages together (in the American Standard Version) at the Bible Gateway website. Once there, you may choose to view the same passages together in any of the versions on the Bible Gateway server. Then use the "back" button on your browser to return to this page.

Introduction to this wiki version

I love two books that I was assigned to use in my scripture studies at Regis College, University of Toronto: Gospel Parallels and Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum. I have marked up my copies extensively over the years as I have struggled with the beautiful, if sometimes baffling, differences between the four portraits of Jesus provided by the evangelists under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

On 14 December 2016, the feast of St. John of the Cross, the happy thought struck me that there might be a version of the gospel parallels available online. There is!

I prefer the wiki format to HTML, and I wanted to have a version online that I could begin to mark up to my own taste and for my own purposes. I have produced this initial version in the space of a couple of hours. I hope, eventually, to make live links to each of the bible passages to the USCCB edition of the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE). I have kept the original author's links in the leftmost column of the tables to the American Standard Version (ASV) at Bible Gateway. They are magnificent links, and provide multiple passages on the same page for the ASV version.

Things to do

Highlight material unique to John. Maybe do that for all four gospels? Or pull it out and put it in different pages?

Highlight Q material.

References

These footnotes are from the wiki edition alone and are my responsibility.

  1. Compare Luke 5:1-11 to John 21:1-8.
  2. I have put Mt 26.21-25 in bold because it seems to follow the preceding passage.
  3. I have put Mk 14.18-21 in bold because it seems to follow the preceding passage.
  4. The original version does not have Mt 28:16-20 in bold. I think this was a typo, since it does follow the preceding passage in Matthew in that column. It is bolded in the author's next section.
  5. Compare John 21:1-8 to Luke 5:1-11.
