The iconoclasts were Biblical literalists inspired by the Jewish and Muslim interpretation of the Scriptures that forbid "making graven images." Catholics understand that prohibition to be against the practice of creating idols found in pagan religions, but do not see it as a prohibition of using proper images of God, angels, demons, Jesus, or saints.
