Reflections
The verb in Aramaic and Hebrew from which the noun was coined means "to make distinct, declare, distinguish, separate." The noun is derived from a passive form of the verb, so that a "pharisee" is someone who is separated or distinguished from others. There is a lot to like about the pharisees. They loved the Scriptures and studied them daily. They wanted to please God by obeying the Law that GOD had given them through Moses. Their "rabbis" (teachers) figured out how to apply the principles of the Law to everyday life. Because of the genius of the Pharisees, Judaism became a portable religion and survived the destruction of the Temple and the loss of the promised land in 70 AD. Our rabbi, Jesus, and His groupies resembled the Pharisees more than they did other groups of Jews in their day (Sadducees, scribes, Essenes, Zealots, etc.). We cannot condemn the Pharisees without being Pharisaical. We do exactly what they do: we try to figure out what is the true law of GOD and use that judgment about the law to judge our neighbor. May GOD have mercy on us all!
