Probabilism

One of the principles of canon law is that we MUST NOT turn "shoulds" into "musts." If something is not strictly prohibited as a matter of law, it is not prohibited, even if it is a departure from the ideal.

Pascal hated the Jesuits because we tend to be probabilists:

"Probabilism is the moral system which holds that, when there is question solely of the lawfulness or unlawfulness of an action, it is permissible to follow a solidly probable opinion in favour of liberty even though the opposing view is more probable."
