My Great Western Auto Tour

Wednesday, April 17: Kalona, Iowa

I did some earth moving and grading today. Then I spent hours and hours starting to teach Regina and the boys how to fly the model airplane that I brought them. The runway is bare earth right now, so we threw the airplane for takeoff and landed deadstick in the dirt. Everybody flew pretty well, but no one is ready to solo yet. We bothered the neighbors next door, so later in the day we had to restrict our flying to Lee's property and another neighbor's field. The engine ran hot at first. We tried changing fuel, but still had problems. I eventually found out that the original owner had put too large a prop on the plane. Going down in pitch made the engine behave as it should.
