My Great Western Auto Tour

Monday, May 6: Calgary, Alberta, to Kenmare, North Dakota

The snow continued to fall from Sunday to Monday. Here's how things looked early in the morning. Pat and Dale suggested that I wait until later in the morning to give the streets time to clear. I'm very glad that I didn't. I got away around 7:30 AM and escaped the city within an hour or so. I could hear on the radio that traffic was deteriorating as more and more people tried to get to work.

I drove non-stop for four and a half hours. I lost patience once with a van in front of me and a pickup behind me. I pulled over to pass the van and nearly lost control of the car. It is the hardest winter driving I have done in many years. Once I reached the outskirts of Medicine Hat, the snow turned to rain. East of Medicine Hat, I finally escaped the clouds and drove the rest of the day on clear, dry roads.
